Farmers are in good company

Who?

R & RW Bartlett, a family farming business based in Staffordshire.

Did what?

Has become a limited company.

What does this mean?

In order to bring about tax benefits and create what the father-and-son partnership describe as a “robust business structure”, the pair decided to reorganise their business and become a limited company. Company director Rod Bartlett said of the incorporation: “We have a significant investment programme and are constantly updating machinery to take advantage of technological advancements, so the move to limited company status means we are well placed to continue growing the business in the future.”

Who advised?

Dudley-based law firm Hawkins Hatton advised on the reorganisation of the business, and Steve Ward from Michael Duffy Partnership, based in Birmingham, acted as the accountant.

Insider comment:

Having set up the family farming business in 1950, the Bartletts hope to keep it a stable source of income for years to come. The pair already deliver their produce to food service outlets, wholesalers and supermarket chains throughout the Midlands, nationally and Europe through their Skipper brand. Having built up their farming empire, the business now employs 80 people - 40 of whom are full time members of staff. Colin Rodrigues from Hawkins Hatton said: "This business is a prime example of farmers who have recognised the potential in their farm as being a sound commercial venture, and so by treating it with care and reverence they have created a business model which will stand the test of time."
