Nottingham set to launch £40m data centre
Nottingham is launching The Portal, a new 90,000 sq ft carrier class data centre providing carrier neutral national and international high-speed fibre links. The new facility, which will be unveiled at the Invest in Nottingham day on 27 May, will be built on the old British Rail IT site, which is part of the city’s Southside regeneration zone. It is being developed in partnership with Emnet Solutions. Those behind the scheme say they hope the new centre will be able to supply nearby planned schemes such as Medi Park, and that The Portal will act as an “aggregation point” for UK Midlands Internet Service Providers (ISPs). A spokesperson for Nottingham City Council said: “Just as in the past sea port, railway and airport infrastructure became essential to a city, the latest must-have is a data centre. The development of The Portal will firmly put Nottingham on the map regionally, nationally and internationally.” The council says it is hoping the £40m scheme will be ready by early 2011.
