Typhoo factory site could unlock Eastside
Birmingham’s Eastside development area has been given another boost as the 2.6-acre site of the former Typhoo Tea factory comes onto the market. The news follows the announcement that high-speed rail plans will entail the building of a new railway station in Eastside. The Typhoo site is being marketed by Jones Lang LaSalle and comprises approximately 150,000 sq ft of warehouse and office space, as well as 0.9 acres of land to the northern part of the site bordering New Canal St, currently used for surface car parking. Planning permission already exists for a mixed-use development of residential, commercial and leisure facilities, but the site’s future could also be determined by its location in Eastside, which is at the heart of Birmingham’s digital area and close to Aston and Birmingham City universities. The freehold site is to be sold vacant. Meanwhile, on the other side of Digbeth, the city’s Southside development has been declared a legacy project by the city council. The Southern Gateway project encompasses the 150 acres surrounding the wholesale markets. A vast development site close to the Bullring will be freed up once the markets move to a new base in Witton.
