Yorkshire Business Insider is holding a special breakfast debate on international trade in Yorkshire, as we gear up for our inaugural International Trade Awards in May.

This exclusive Question Time-style debate will give our audience of business leaders and advisors the opportunity to ask our expert panel for their views on the big issues affecting export.

With many business leaders now pinning their hopes on international trade for growth and job creation, more companies than ever are looking to foreign shores for fresh opportunities.

There has never been a better time to make the most of international trade with the weaker pound making deals more attractive plus a growing desire across the globe for quality Yorkshire brands.

Insider editor Richard Abbott says: "Despite the ongoing tough economic conditions, there are some real opportunities for growth via international trade. But breaking into new markets is not easy. There are a whole host of challenges relating to language and culture, distribution and security of contracts.

"There is also the small matter of confidence. Given the turbulence in the global economy, is now the right time to look to emerging economies?"

A new survey by the Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership reveals Europe is the city region's main trading partner, with 72 per cent of exporting businesses selling to "Other EU" markets, 54 per cent selling to Germany and 51 per cent to France.

Fewer businesses export to the emerging markets: 30 per cent trade with China; 34 per cent with India; 22 per cent with South America; and 20 per cent with Russia. Are local businesses missing an opportunity? Find out more on 29th February.
