Insider Property Awards West Midlands 2009
John McGuigan, director of city development at Coventry City Council, said he was “surprised and delighted” to win the prestigious property personality of the year title at the Insider West Midlands Property Awards 2009. McGuigan, who is the man most closely associated with the transformation and planned regeneration of Coventry, paid tribute to the hundreds of people working on regenerating the city.
McGuigan’s award was one of ten handed out at a glittering awards ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel at the NEC. More than 500 property professionals attended the event, which has become a key date in the commercial property sector’s calendar.
They saw M3 pick up the best industrial agent award and a share of the property deal of the year award alongside Advantage West Midlands and Goodman International for working together to bring forward the former Jaguar factory site at Browns Lane in Coventry as a key development site for the city.
GBR came out on top in the best office agent category whilst the developer winner was Calthorpe, in the commercial developer category, Stoford, in the regeneration category, Argent in the construction project category and Gazeley, in the sustainable development category.
Other winners on the night were Glenn Howells Architects in the architecture firm category and Mace, which was crowned professional consultancy team of the year.
Midlands Business Insider editor Andy Coyne reflected on the property market skills on show in his pre-dinner speech.
“What is clear as we end this awful year is that there is a huge amount of talent with the Midlands property sector. Some of that talent has been recognised in these awards but by no means all,” he said.
“With a fair wind that talent will be allowed to flourish at some stage in 2010 and the development of our cities and towns will be back on track.”
