The US remains the single biggest export market for UK companies and an attractive port of call for newcomers to overseas trade. In June 2011 President Obama committed to maintaining the country as a key global location in which to do business, relocate and invest.
But despite a common language, there are numerous regional variations to comprehend, with many experts saying that doing business in the US is like doing business in 50 different countries. Insider's first international breakfast of 2012 will explore the lie of the land for companies interested in this market through a series of expert presentations.
Produced by the events team at Insider, the company responsible for publishing the award winning business magazine North West Business Insider, this event is one of the landmarks of the corporate calendar.
Chris Hayton, business development director at sustainable energy group ENER-G, will share his insights of setting up a new US operation. After securing a $6.3m energy services contract in New Jersey, ENER-G now has a presence on Broadway, Manhattan, and has an attractive pipeline of opportunities up and down the East coast.
Olivia Kehoe, managing director of international marketing group BDB, will explain how best to market your company in the US, how it varies with Europe, and the cultural differences that companies should be aware of when doing business stateside.
Bill Montague, finance director of luggage brand Antler, which has a Chicago office, will speak about the firm’s international presence, the perks and challenges of targeting US consumers and the need for a permanent staff presence in the country.
David Garnett, chief executive of Lock Inspection Systems, has been doing business in the US since the late 1990s when he did a management buyout of this metal detector manufacturer. Nearly 50 per cent of the company’s revenue comes from America, where Lock operates a site in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
Both ENER-G and BDB were winners at Insider's inaugural International Trade Awards in December 2011. Insider will be adding further speakers to the event in the coming weeks, which will also involve an opportunity for the audience to ask questions and gain key insight into this market.
