It has been an interesting year in the regional deals market. After a surge in activity in the last quarter of 2010, deal levels have fallen back slightly and so far this year the Midlands market has continued to be dominated by trade sales.

Advisers are reporting an increased appetite from both buyers and sellers driven by opportunistic acquisitions or disposals where the parties are involved in the same or similar trade and have competed with each other over the years.

For deals particularly involving SME's debt funding is still difficult to come by which has left the MBO market flat and private equity-backed deals or owner assisted buy-outs - VIAMBOs - have come to the fore.

Private equity firms have come back into the market after a quiet 2010 but the search for quality deals has led them to look beyond the Midlands for suitable companies to invest in. Competition with other PE houses not based in the region is also increasing, potentially putting upward pressure on valuations.

It is against this backdrop that our Big Deals Debate takes place. Aimed at corporate finance practitioners based in both the West and East Midlands we aim to dig beneath the surface to find out exactly what’s happening and to look ahead to predict where the market is going and where future opportunities are likely to come from.

Our Question Time-style event will be a panel-led discussion chaired by Insider deputy editor Sam Metcalf. But with an audience of dealmakers we expect the level of interaction between audience and panel to be high.
