Around 150 business leaders gathered at the Liverpool Marriott Hotel South in February for Insider’s annual Liverpool Leaders Lunch, an event that celebrates leadership and the qualities that make a great business leader.
What better way to do this than by welcoming as speaker the chief executive of one of the region’s largest employers and the North West’s only FTSE 100 company. Almost a year to the day since the formidable John Roberts handed over the reins to Philip Green, the new United Utilities chief executive shared his thoughts on the future of the business, his role and the importance of strong leadership.
Green described his job as a “privilege” and a “unique opportunity”, in which he runs a business that is “inextricably linked to the local community and the local environment”. Talking of the annual £1bn investment he expects United Utilities to continue to make, Green was keen to outline the progress made by the group in areas such as the cleanliness of the Mersey. “The company I inherited from John Roberts was in a better state of health than the one he inherited, but a lot more needs to be done,” he said.
