Lancashire has come a long way since its association with the cotton industry put it at the centre of the region's economy in the mid-19th century.
Only a few mill buildings now remain as reminders of a once proud industry but the entrepreneurial spirit that made Lancashire great lives on.
Easily accessible because of its motorway and transport links, Lancashire plays hosts to many leading businesses and a highly trained workforce. These span diverse sectors such as the defence industry, nuclear power, engineering and other market leading technical areas. However the business landscape is changing and the county is at a crossroads.
The failed £700m Tithebarn project for Preston and the recent job losses announced by BAE Systems illustrate the difficulties faced.
Both highlight the importance of the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which has been set up to help kick-start Lancashire's economic recovery. The LEP brings together businesses, councils and universities to harness a growth strategy that will enable it to bid for funding.
Insider will assemble a panel of experts to analyse the challenges facing Lancashire, the opportunities offered by the LEP and planned Enterprise Zone and how businesses can take advantage of the investment and development schemes that are available.
