The Liverpool and North West pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai has attracted 115,000 visitors and 59 per cent of visitors would do business with Liverpool as a result. Speaking at Insider’s Manufacturing in China event at Halliwells in Manchester, Phil Southward, operations director for Liverpool at the event said: “We’ve made a fantastic start.”
The panel were Tony Caldeira, managing director of Caldeira, the Knowsley-based soft-furnishings business with a factory in China.
Barrie Simmonds, Chemical innovation, asked: “I am a UK-based chemical manufacturer with distribution network in China and we are considering setting up a manufacturing plant out there. What advice can you give me in order to implement a plan?”
Paul Pickup from Promethean, the Lancashire-based interactive whitboard bsuiness with a factory in Shenzen said: “My advice based on my experience would be to set up a wholly owned foreign enterprise.” This gave him more control over products and processes.
Tony Caldeira meanwhile runs a joint venture business with a local partner. His partner takes care of local issues with the government and the large amount of red tape that can come with setting up in China. “We did this step by step, it pays to take your time,” he said.
