Insider Property Industry Awards 2010 - Yorkshire

Insider Property Industry Awards 2010 - YorkshireThe acquisition of No. 1 Whitehall Riverside in Leeds was the big winner at Insider’s Yorkshire Property Industry Awards.

The gala dinner, attended by almost 350 of the region’s top property professionals and advisors, saw the £51.3m sale clinch the Commercial Property Deal of the Year award.

Property group London & Stamford sold the property to NFU Mutual Insurance Society this year, after purchasing the building in 2009.

Collecting the prize, Simon Lister, investment director at Savills, the agent that worked on the deal, said: “In a tough market you have got to work hard and play to your strengths. There is still a lot of money out there and a lot of people who love property and have a passion for it.”

Insider’s panel of expert judges was full of admiration for the deal. They said that buying anything of this scale at the bottom of the market in 2009 took real guts. Extracting such profit so quickly was dealmaking in its purest sense, they added.

Other winners on the evening included BWB Consulting in the Sustainable Building/Development of the Year category for its Marks & Spencer distribution facility at ProLogis Park in Bradford.

Developer of the Year was Wilton Developments, with the judges remarking that the company behind 10 South Parade in Leeds had “gone where others feared to tread and are doing the deals”.

Leeds City Council won the Local Authority of the Year Award after impressing the judges with its support in getting the Trinity Leeds retail scheme back on track, while progressing Leeds Arena.

Building Design Partnership won Architects Practice of the Year, with the judges describing its work at the University of York as “nothing short of superb”.

Also collecting awards were ISIS Waterside Regeneration (Regeneration Award), Alsop Sparch (Design Excellence Award), Santander Corporate Bank (Property Funder of the Year), DLA Piper (Property Law Firm of the Year) and Knight Frank (Agency Team of the Year).

The event sponsors were Archial, Bowman Riley Architects, Bradley-Mason, Building Design Partnership, BWB Consulting, Cobbetts, Drivers Jonas Deloitte, PEC Building & Shopfitting, WHP Building & Project Consultants and Wilton Developments. Associate sponsor was Edward Symmons.
