Insider’s Property Awards South West 2009, our second property awards in the region, proved a memorable night for several companies and individuals after a nail-biting 12 months.

The blue-riband award, Property Personality of the Year, was won by Colin Molton, the South West director for the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA). Molton's efforts in the past 12 months to partner with the property industry and keep investing in the region's homes and communities won plaudits from across the region, making him a popular choice on the night. The HCA's John Cottrell, who picked up the gong for Molton, said the win was testament to the ingenuity and resolve of the HCA to help the region and the industry through a difficult period.

The other big winner on the night was property agency DTZ, which was named Office Agency of the Year and Industrial Agency of the Year – although it lost out to Savills for the residential agency award.

Some strong competition in several categories generated plenty of interest, with Midas seeing off several big rivals to win the Construction Firm of the Year award and Stride Treglown coming through to be named Architects Practice of the Year.

Deal of the Year was also hotly contested, with St Modwen and partners narrowly losing out to Muse’s £350m multi-partner deal in Swindon.

Commercial Development of the Year was also close-fought, with Cubex’s Paragon narrowly losing out to Sutton Harbour’s flagship waterside development in Plymouth, Salt Quay House.
