Insider Property Awards 2010 - Wales
The past year has seriously tested the property and construction industry. But 300 of the sector’s finest turned up at Cardiff’s Mercure Holland House to salute the people, firms and deals that kept Wales developing between April 2009 and March 2010.
The atmosphere was cheerful and celebratory, with the number of guests up on last year. JR Smart chairman John Smart was the star of the show, picking up awards for Developer of the Year and Property Personality, and delivering a few words of his own which had the audience in stitches. Talking to Insider after winning the sought-after award, he hit a realistic note, saying: “It’s not easy. There’s not a big market at the moment.”
Questioned by compere Amanda Protheroe-Thomas, Smart said the highlight of his year had been getting Peacocks to move into his speculatively built Capital Link building, which had been described by one adviser as a “white elephant”.
The awards were judged by Christina Hirst of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors; Tim Holder of TRH Invest; Chris Munday from the Welsh Assembly Government; Douglas Friedli from Wales Business Insider. The evening raised £2,700 for the chosen charity, Marie Curie Cancer Care.
