Insider Property Awards 2010 - North West
870 guests, representing the cream of the North West’s property community, were at Manchester Central to celebrate the successes of the industry in what have been trying times.
The big winner on the night was Liverpool property group Downing, which picked up a treble – chairman George Downing winning Property Personality of the Year to go with the Property Deal of the Year and Best Commercial Workplace gongs the firm had picked up earlier.
Asked by host Jimmy Carr for the highlight of his career so far, Downing said: “Bringing the UK Border Agency to The Capital is the highlight. We’ve been able to keep a lot of jobs for Liverpool and we’re very proud about that. Hopefully it will allow the city to maintain the momentum it’s gathered.”
Although the PAG deal in Accrington showed excellent judgement and skills, and the Manchester police force deal was a massive boost for the joint venture responsible for Central Park, Downing won the day for the deal that dominated Liverpool in 2009. The judges said: “Make no mistake, this was brave stuff from the word go, when Downing outbid 17 big investors to buy the Capital. It invested heavily in refurbishing and reaped the rewards in landing a major occupier. Downing was exposed and came through as it has so often before.”
