Nearly 250 people took the opportunity to celebrate Sheffield’s emergence as a centre of commerce at Insider’s South Yorkshire Dealmakers Dinner in June.
Talk of a downturn among the dealmaking community didn’t stop the region’s finest from making the trip to Sheffield’s Mercure St Paul’s Hotel for an evening to reflect and celebrate the region’s successes.
The big winner of the night was BHP Ingram Forrest Corporate Finance, taking home awards for Corporate Advisory Team of the Year and Dealmaking Firm of the Year. Dave Forrest, corporate partner, was also crowned Dealmaker of the Year, while the firm was lead adviser on the Deal of the Year, the management buyout from administration of BLP Furniture Components.
Lifetime achievement award went to hlw law founding partner Andrew Hartley. With 40 years in corporate dealmaking, Hartley has seen great developments throughout the region.
“It has grown because the quality of the offering has grown enormously,” he said. “People no longer need to go to London or Leeds. When I first started in Sheffield in the 1970s all the steel companies and the big engineering companies went to London for their advice, and sometimes to Leeds. The standard of service in Sheffield can support anything Sheffield needs.”
Insider hosted a new award for this year: the Young Dealmaker of the Year, aimed at rising stars under the age of 30. Peter Crawford, corporate lawyer at Taylor & Emmet. Crawford walked away with the award.
Other winners included relative newcomers Irwin Mitchell and Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets.
