Over 900 people gathered at The Royal Armouries in Leeds on 27 November to celebrate what has been a tough year in the deals market. But just to prove that the region can still compete with the best of them, the £198.4m take-private of SSP was named Deal of the Year and beat off competition including the sale of Foodvest to Lion Capital, Tunstall’s £514m management buyout and the sale of Firth Rixson.
Garry Wilson was named Dealmaker of the Year for the second time in three years after the fund he co-founded raised £164m for Endless Fund II – the largest sum raised in the UK outside London. Wilson dedicated the prize to Phil Tate, his late colleague who was killed in a snowboarding accident earlier this year.
Alison Legg, who retired this year as a partner in the transaction services department in KPMG’s Leeds office, was this year’s recipient of the Roger Powell Lifetime Achievement Award, in association with The Royal Bank of Scotland.
Legg was rewarded for her work in establishing her team’s position at the heart of Yorkshire dealmaking. Her due diligence has been brought to bear on a range of top Yorkshire deals in recent years, and she trained many of today’s younger dealmakers.
In the team awards, prize winners included Deloitte, Eversheds, Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets, Barclays Commercial Finance and Park Place Corporate Finance. Individual winners included Martin Jenkins, Yunus Seedat, Dave Harris, Colin Stirling, David Culpan and Giles Taylor.
