How would you sum up a year that started with the venture capital industry coming under sustained attack, followed that up with a credit crunch and ended with a hike in capital gains tax?
However unpromising it might sound, the 12 months to March 2008 produced some great buyouts, acquisitions and even – unusually for Wales – a couple of flotations.
With all that and an uncertain outlook for this year, Wales’s top finance professionals had a lot to discuss at Insider’s Dealmakers Awards for 2008 at Cardiff’s City Hall on 25 June.
Jason Evans of Lloyds TSB picked up the first ever Corporate Finance Personality of the Year award, while HSBC’s Kevin Beevers was Banker of the Year and The Royal Bank of Scotland was named Bank of the Year. HSBC and Lloyds’ LDC private equity arm also had a hand in the top venture capital deal, the management buyout of Penn Pharmaceuticals. Other winners on the night included Deloitte, M&A Solicitors, Geldards, Gambit Corporate Finance and HW Corporate Finance.
