The cream of the Lancashire dealmaking community was out in force in late January to see Bolton-based accountancy firm Cowgill Holloway walk away with two of the top accolades on offer at Insider’s Lancashire Dealmakers Awards 2009. Over 200 of the region’s advisers, funders and entrepreneurs gathered for the glittering awards ceremony, compèred by Insider editor Michael Taylor.
Cowgill Holloway was named Corporate Finance Advisory Team of the Year, an award sponsored by Napthens Solicitors, while Ian Johnson, head of corporate finance at the firm, scooped the coveted Dealmaker of the Year award, sponsored by Forbes Solicitors. He beat off competition from regional rivals Oliver Burton of The Royal Bank of Scotland, John Daly of Tenon Corporate Finance, Jim Akrill of PM+M, John Green of Pierce Corporate Finance, and Daniel Milnes of Forbes Solicitors.
Johnson worked on the sale of plant hire company Garic to Liverpool-based group Bibby, a deal that was also named Deal of the Year. However, he admitted that in the current climate it’s a deal that probably wouldn’t have been possible this year. “We’ve had a great year, but we know it’s going to be tough and we just have to help clients work through this,” he said.
Of the young corporate financiers coming through the ranks, Oliver Burton, of The Royal Bank of Scotland in Preston, was named Young Dealmaker of the Year. He was also named Banker of the Year and had some reassuring words for the audience: “There are still opportunities out there; we do have money to lend.”
