Insider’s economic debate road show turns its attention to the West of England in early December. A panel of leaders from business and the public sector will debate the challenges and opportunities facing the subregion in front of an invited business audience.

With the bid to form a Local Enterprise Partnership accepted, this is a crucial moment for this economic hub of the South West. Covering Bristol and Bath and the areas bordering these two important cities – South Gloucestershire and North and North East Somerset – its success is crucial to the wider region. Confirmation of the LEP means the stage should be set for the West of England to push ahead in 2011. But that means that business, academia and the local authorities will all need to pull in the same direction.

The LEP bid has set the economic agenda and priorities, and it looks like this:

  • Business – key industry sectors, innovation and the development of new technologies, start-ups and small business growth
  • Place – employment land/premises, housing and community infrastructure, transport and environment
  • People – how to facilitate a workforce with the skills that businesses need
  •

Most would agree that’s a sensible summary of priorities, but there is also much to be done. What can the LEP realistically be expected to contribute, and what should fall to others?

    The panel likely to include:

  • Barry Warburton, West of England Aerospace Forum
  • Andrew Wood, managing partner, RSM Tenon
  • A chief executive from one of the four West of England councils
  • David Mace, regional senior director, GVA Grimley
  •

Insider’s forum is an opportunity for the business community in the area to listen and to question those behind the big issues that will affect the West of England’s economic future. If you would like to attend, please reply as soon as possible by completing the online reply form here. If you would like to submit a question to the panel, please include this on your reply form.
