South Bristol Debate: What next for South Bristol?

Panel to include:

Alan Davies, planning and environment director, Bristol Airport
Simon Price, partner, Alder King
Barbara Janke, leader, Bristol City Council

Insider’s economic debate roadshow arrives in South Bristol in June, where a panel of business leaders and the public sector will debate the challenges and opportunities in the south of the region’s leading city before an invited business audience.

Despite the impending demise of the South West RDA, it’s worth remembering that South Bristol remains hugely important as a regeneration centre not just for Bristol but for the South West as a whole.

Hengrove Park is one really important centre of activity, being a site of regeneration that’s starting to take shape now, with the opening of the South Bristol Skills Academy and the planned opening next year of South Bristol Community Hospital and the Hengrove Leisure Centre Pool.

There are commercial projects in the offing, too, and it’s only a few months since the South West’s largest dedicated film and television production facility, The Bottle Yard, opened for business in Hengrove. It is a 300,000 square foot dedicated production facility that is intended to provide a new home for UK film and television production in the South West as well as attracting major overseas productions of all sizes.

Another important development that most in South Bristol are watching closely is Bristol City FC’s proposed new stadium at Ashton Vale. Will the football club’s plan to build a new stadium and sell its existing ground to the supermarket chain J Sainsbury come to pass, and if it did just what would it mean for the immediate area and for South Bristol’s longer term regeneration?

The expansion of Bristol Airport will also potentially have a big impact on South Bristol, but will the new jobs that are created be taken up by South Bristolians?
