Effervescent TV chefs and commentators regularly descend on outposts of Britain’s food culture, to heap plaudits on such diverse treats as the Craster kipper, Wensleydale cheese, and Cornish cream teas. All are undeniably scrumptious, but given the remarkable range of famous foods across the Midlands, it’s odd that they don’t receive similar attention.
Whether it is crumbly Shrewsbury biscuits, Melton Mowbray’s pork pies, the traditional Staffordshire oatcake, the distinctive Bakewell tart, or the Lincolnshire sausage the region clearly has much to offer.
At our latest breakfast event Insider will throw the spotlight on the effect of this thriving industry on the Midlands economy. We’ll take a look at the challenges the food industry faces in the wake of the abolition of the regional development agencies. Who will take up the mantle of providing funds to growing food businesses, and who will promote the industry across the Midlands? We’ll also ask how producers can reduce their costs, by sharing distribution networks. Signs are that this is happening through consolidation, and an increasing level of foreign ownership. We’ll explore whether this will continue.
Our panel will also explore the growing need for finance, to allow expansion, increase output, or to develop new products and ranges. Innovation is the lifeblood of the food industry, and we’ll discover what the local universities are doing to work more closely with the private sector to drive this forward.
With input from an invited audience of business owners, company directors, and professionals this is sure to be a lively debate.
