Insider’s economic debate road show arrives in the Black Country in May, when a panel of business leaders and decision makers will debate the key issues facing the local economy in front of a business audience.

Like other areas in the West Midlands, the Black Country has suffered from high levels of unemployment and low skill levels. It is crucial that the area produces skilled people to meet the needs of local businesses. Will the announcement in the Budget that 40,000 new apprenticeships are to be created have an impact locally? With little public money around do companies need to do more themselves in the training and skills area? And do local universities and colleges work closely enough with the business community to help raise skill levels and to help them research and develop products and processes?

In this special event we intend to drill down to look at the area’s future prospects, looking at both challenges and opportunities.

Other topics under consideration include:

  • Enterprise zones - where are they most needed and what do we expect them to achieve?
  • The Black Country LEP -What are its priorities and what are its chances of succeeding?
  • Access to finance - are local initiatives helping to provide much needed financial support to Black Country businesses?
  • Development and regeneration – with a lack of public sector cash around and the regional development agency being wound down, how can we ensure place- changing schemes proceed?
  • Transport - will the Black Country be a beneficiary of the plans for high speed rail between London and Birmingham?
  • Retail - What can be done to get new shops in and to help the ones that are there to prosper?
