Insider’s economic debate roadshow heads to Exeter in March to consider the city and its economic priorities now that the new coalition government has set out how it wants to reshape politics with its localism agenda – but in a world of reduced public spending. The debate will be an opportunity for our panel of business leaders and public sector specialists to talk about the new reality and what it means for the Exeter area in the long term.
Most agree that Exeter’s Princesshay scheme has transformed the city centre and given it greater drawing power – but are the city’s and the wider county’s fortunes still on the up?
Exeter and East Devon is certainly an area with significant potential for long term economic growth. The city is seen as an emerging science and knowledge based economy, boosted by its top ten ranked university and an international airport. And this is something that was recognised by the last government when it became a Growth Point in 2006, with the Exeter and East Devon local authority partners subsequently committing to deliver several strategic developments.
The breakfast debate is, then, a chance to take stock of how these developments are progressing and to look more widely at the economic prospects for Exeter and its catchment. With the government in cost-saving mode, just what resource is left for the city to make the best of its assets? Or can local enterprise and entrepreneurialism help to reinvent Exeter and East Devon without much outside help?
Realistically, economies do need the right support to thrive, and with the South West RDA now being wound down the role of the local authorities as enablers of business will be put in sharper focus than ever. What climate do businesses want the councils – and whatever local enterprise partnership the area gets in time – to foster? What is the best role for the public sector to play?
Insider's forum is an opportunity for the business community in the area to listen and to question those behind the big issues that will affect Exeter and East Devon’s future.
