East Midlands Property DinnerWhilst it can hardly be said that they were swinging from the chandeliers at this year’s East Midlands Property Dinner, there’s no denying that there was a definite sense of optimism amongst the 500-plus crowd.

This might have had something to do with flamboyant compere Gyles Brandreth, but I’d like to think it had more in common with a steady trickle of big deals emerging in the East Midlands over the last year.

The big winner on the night was Blueprint, the regeneration company, which picked up both the prestigious Commercial Developer of the Year and Regeneration Project of the Year Awards. It was also a good night for King Sturge, which won Agent of the Year, and Innes England which won the blue riband Property Deal of the Year gong. Graham Cartledge of architect Benoy picked up the richly-deserved Special Achievement Award.

The night was something of a triumph for Blueprint’s Phoenix Square development. The scheme, which houses a state-of-the-art cinema has been in the headlines lately after a £250,000 bail out by Leicester City Council to keep its cinema trading. John Long from Blueprint was quick to assure tenants at Phoenix Square that this wouldn’t affect their businesses or homes at all.

In a marked contrast from last year, this year’s winners all came from the Big Three East Midlands cities. Where last year Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire showed their more famous neighbours the way; this year Derby, Leicester and Nottingham came out fighting.

The chosen charity was Wooden Spoon, The Children’s Charity of rugby, and among the audience was former England star Graham Rowntree.

This year, the East Midlands Property Dinner was celebrating its tenth anniversary. Fitting, then, that this year’s event was such a resounding success. Here’s to the next ten years of regenerating the East Midlands – we’ll be there celebrating again next year. See you there.
