It was hardly a case of “Recession? What recession?” at this year’s East Midlands Property Dinner, but the upbeat nature of the crowd – egged on by an exuberant compère Gyles Brandreth – belied the sometimes parlous nature of the industry in the East Midlands.
Around 500 property professionals from all over the East Midlands saw Cedar House Investments – so often the runners-up in this category – walk away with the Commercial Developer of the Year award, whilst Nottingham property veteran Mich Stevenson picked up the well deserved Special Achievement Award, and followed it with a somewhat emotional speech.
Northamptonshire – and especially Corby – fared well at this year’s awards, with the Corby 50m swimming pool taking the newly-created Public Building of the Year gong; whilst Corby Train Station triumphed in the Regeneration Project of the Year category. Corby’s ceaseless regeneration work continues to pick up the medals, then.
But all five counties in the region were well represented, with Lincolnshire’s new Food Technology Centre and Think Tank office building making the shortlists.
The chosen charity for the evening was the Wish Upon a Star, for which nearly £9,000 was raised.
Many of the doom mongers were saying that this year’s Property Dinner would be a very downbeat affair – indeed, some said it shouldn’t go ahead at all what with the state of the industry. It’s never been more pleasing to prove them wrong. The East Midlands commercial property sector is on the march again – we’ll be there at next year’s awards to celebrate it.
