Bristol Science & Technology Breakfast 2010
Insider’s economic debate road show turns its attention to science and technology in late May, with an eye on the work finally getting underway on SPark, the Bristol and Bath science park. A panel of local experts will debate the nature of the opportunity in science and technology before an invited business audience.
A science park for Bristol, Bath and the wider region has long been planned, but in February this year the government announced a £10.2m investment to kick-start SPark’s 54-acre development site in Emersons Green. That was followed by comfirmation that the new National Composites Centre will be established there, with funding for the planned 70,000 sq ft facility already secured. The centre, on which work will soon start, will be an independent, open-access facility for the design and rapid manufacture of composite products. More than 200 industry researchers and academic experts will be based there once its open, working together to speed new technologies through the design and laboratory phases and into production.
The question for those involved in science and hi-tech in all its forms is how to engage with the SPark opportunity.
If it is to be an enabler of wider collaboration and play host in time to clusters of specialist businesses, what do the region’s businesses and universities need to know or be doing now to get the most out of SPark once it is operational?
Panelists to include:
John Bradford, manager, Science City Bristol
Mark Brunsdon, partner, GVA Grimley
Stephen Rosser, chairman, Clarke Willmott
A senior figure from the South West RDA
