Insider’s economic debate road show turns its attention to universities in November, asking how academia and enterprise can engage better to ensure that the UK gets more commercial benefit out of its status as a leading global innovator.
The new coalition government has made clear it wants a revolution in the way that enterprise and academia engage, but the question is how you make that happen.
How far has the relationship between universities and business evolved? And what needs to happen next for more of the commercial potential tied up in university-derived IP to be realised?
Some initiatives, like knowledge transfer partnerships or incubator facilities for spin-out companies, are now well-established. But alongside this there are new ideas being explored, like university-led iNets programmes in three key South West sectors. What difference will these make – and how else could the landscape change for the better?
Insider’s panel brings together heavy hitters who are engaged with trying to get the two sides talking more often and more productively.
This debate will launch the two-day Universities South West annual conference, entitled ‘Driving economic growth in a changing regional landscape’. As such, it’s a unique opportunity for business leaders to get to know the enterprise and knowledge transfer experts from all 13 of the region’s universities and start some productive conversations. Immediately after the debate the conference will continue with a keynote speech from Professor Steve West, chair of Universities South West. It will be followed by two days of seminars and workshops.
