In 2009, Manchester was designated as the UK’s first Low Carbon Economic Area. Over a period of five years the aim is to save 6 million tonnes of carbon, create an additional £650m in the economy as a result, and support 34,800 jobs.
In this feature, we’ll take a look at the work done so far. Where has the city scored quick wins, and what challenges remain? It will be an opportunity to understand how Manchester is ‘selling’ the idea and learning from other cities in Europe. It will also be a chance to understand the role of collaboration between the public and private sector, and how this aids project delivery.
We want to hear from those in local government and the private sector who can place the city’s position into context. We also want to know the ongoing prospects for job creation in this sector.
PLUS… There’ll also be a piece looking at Manchester’s Northern Quarter, and it’s place in the city’s commercial structure. What’s working for businesses, and what needs to be done? And what plans does the council have to maintain and improve public realm in the area?/
