Sector report – Financial and professional services

The region’s financial and professional services sector is expected to continue growing. Looking at 2009 performance alone, this flagship industry took a battering and is consolidating, but the long-term picture tells a strong story in the North West.

Figures cited in a report by Manchester Metropolitan University – The Changing Professions in the North West of England – show that financial and professional services, along with life sciences, are slowly replacing the historically dominant manufacturing base. In 1997, the sector accounted for just 10.3 per cent of total employment, which grew to 12.6 per cent by 2007; in 2020 it is expected to be one of the dominant forces at work, employing 14.8 per cent of the regional workforce.

In this report, Insider will look at the trends shaping financial and professional services right across the North West. What are the driving forces behind its growth? What are the challenges that remain following the recession? And how can the industry adapt its usually conservative image to meet the demands of clients in the 21st Century? We will also explore how the Legal Services Act – dubbed Tesco Law – will affect the profession.
