Space - Development Land

If there’s one legacy the Midlands’ long industrial heritage has left, it’s an abundance of brownfield sites ripe for development. For years, the government’s planning policies have actively promoted bringing these plots back into useful and productive life, with often spectacular results.

Over the last few years, the advice to developers has been to promote mixed-used schemes for such land to get it past the planners, but can the planners afford to be choosy in the current climate? And to what degree are cash-strapped local authorities having to sell off one of their biggest assets – land – to developers for bargain prices?

In this feature, we look at what is available, who is buying it and what it is being used for.
