Towns and Cities – Business Improvement Districts

The BIDs have become big news in quite a lot of our towns and cities. The idea is that they give a focus to a particular area, that some of the upkeep responsibilities are taken on by the private sector and that companies come together as a concerted lobbying organisation.

But do they work? What more do they offer than cleaner streets and hanging baskets? Are they worth paying higher business rates for? Isn’t their lobbying function already carried out by other bodies? And do they exist in silos or are BIDS within the same city intended to link together? Our report begs the question and seeks the answers.
